Grammatical Standards

Follow the guidelines below to ensure standards are followed when creating written copy for WyoTech marketing purposes, such as graphic design, social media, press releases, etc.

Numbers

“2” vs. “two”, “3” vs. “three”, etc.

  • If the number is a bullet point or list, use numerical.
  • In a sentence, numbers 1-9 are written out, after that numbers are numerical.
  • MLA writing style.
  • Years and percentages are numerical.

        And Conjunction

        “And” vs. “&”

        • When typing out written content, whether bullet points, paragraphs, etc., use the actual word “and”.
        • Use & only when naming programs or phase names.
        • “Trim & Upholstery”.
        • “Fluid, Power, & Refrigeration”.
        • Keep consistent across social as well.
        • EXCEPTION- if we are running short on character count in captions, the & symbol can be used (or in SMS messages).

                  Punctuation

                  Commas versus Semicolons

                  • If there is a comma in the list, use a semicolon to differentiate. phases/programs THROUGHOUT WHOLE LIST.
                  • If there are no commas in the list, use a comma to differentiate.

                  Oxford comma

                  • When listing three or more things in a list, ALWAYS use the oxford comma.

                    Person and Tense

What person do we write in?

                    • For most audience-facing materials, we will write in the 1st and 2nd persons as though we’re talking to the individual reading.
                    • For Press releases and thought leadership, we will use the 3rd person.

What tense do we write in?

                      • Generally we use Present or Present-future tenses (Unless specifically historical content).
                      • Specific projects NEED TO MATCH across the board (i.e., the viewbook).

                        Titles and Names

                        Trade School

                        • Trade school should be listed as two words, not one.

Industry Certifications versus Certificates versus Qualifications

                        • As a general rule for our opportunities as a whole, we will describe our offerings as “qualifications”.
                        • If describing a PARTICULAR certificate or certification, we can use the exact term.
                          • Make sure to confirm with Training whether it’s a certificate or certification.

                        Program titles

                        • The proper program titles can be found in the WyoTech catalog on the Disclosures page on the website.  When marketing WyoTech’s programs and going to reference OUR program specifically by name, we must use the full title that the program is accredited under.
                          • Applied Welding Technology
                          • Automotive Technology
                          • Collision/Refinishing Technology
                          • Diesel Technology
                          • Advanced Diesel
                          • Applied Service Management
                          • High Performance Powertrains
                          • Motorsports Chassis Fabrication
                          • Street Rod & Custom Fabrication
                          • Trim & Upholstery
                        • If using terms like “WyoTech’s automotive program” or “Our diesel program”, make sure that you do not capitalize the program name UNLESS you are using the proper, accredited program title, so that viewers know it’s being used as a general, common noun, and we are not specifically marketing a program under the wrong name.
                        • When writing “Automotive Technology program”, the word “program” should not be capitalized.
                        • Other notes-
                          • Powertrains is only one word, no matter what program it’s being referenced in.
                          • High Performance is NOT hyphenated.
                          • Collision/Refinishing Technology must use a slash (/), not & or “and”.

                          Capitalization

Do we capitalize headings and bullet points?

                          • We will capitalize the headings to paragraphs and bullet points, but do not capitalize the bullet points themselves minus the first word.
                          • Do not end bullet points with a period.

Our Vision- to capitalize or not to capitalize

                          • We will capitalize the first letters and add periods after each statement- “Our Vision is the Best Training. Best Experience. Best Outcomes.”
                          • Capitalize if listed as bullet points.
